Group evidence widespread public observation ও concern establish করে। এটি establish করে না প্রতিটি report একই stimulus involve করেছিল বা সব witness structured craft বর্ণনা করেছিলেন।
এই Witness Group-এর নামে যা Attribute করা উচিত নয়
Michigan residents-কে collectively confirm করার credit দেওয়া উচিত নয়:

- landed metallic craft;
- identical colour, size বা behaviour;
- object-এর কারণে physical traces;
- radar confirmation;
- witness-দের সঙ্গে deliberate interaction;

- extraterrestrial বা non-human origin।
“swamp gas wave” label-এর অর্থও এই নয় যে Hynek প্রতিটি report-কে swamp gas বলেছিলেন। তাঁর public suggestion marshy area-তে possible luminous effect নিয়ে ছিল এবং complete reconstruction-এর আগে pressure-এর মধ্যে দেওয়া হয়েছিল।

Air Force's public explanation marsh-এ decaying vegetation থেকে released gas-এর কথা বলে এবং স্বীকার করে flares বা pranks কিছু Hillsdale observation-এ contribute করে থাকতে পারে। Witnesses মনে করেছিল explanation তাদের দেখা duration, movement বা apparent structure-এর সঙ্গে fit করে না, তাই তাৎক্ষণিক public criticism হয়।
Representative Gerald Ford, যাঁর district-এ area-টি ছিল, congressional investigation চান। House Armed Services Committee 5 April 1966-এ unidentified flying objects নিয়ে hearing করে, যেখানে Air Force Secretary Harold Brown, Blue Book chief Hector Quintanilla ও Hynek testimony দেন।
Hearing ও “swamp gas” controversy institutional response-এর evidence, resident interpretation correct ছিল—এমন proof নয়।

Group members communicate, point ও একে অপরের reaction follow করেছিল। তাই colour, movement ও object shape-এর estimate partly dependent। Later group summary-এর চেয়ে independently written statement বেশি valuable।
Marsh-Gas Hypothesis
Marsh methane ও other gas release করতে পারে, কিন্তু spontaneous visible combustion rare, এবং popular phrase “swamp gas” কোনো precise physical model নয়। Credible explanation-এ environmental conditions, ignition mechanism, duration, colour, motion ও location match করতে হবে।
কিছু observation marshy ground-এর কাছে ছিল, তাই hypothesis relevant। Light rise, move বা persist করা atmospheric হতে পারে বা temperature layer-এ nearby light reflect হতে পারে। অন্য details additional source ছাড়া fit করা কঠিন।

Flares ও Pranks

Aircraft ও Astronomical Objects
Aircraft lights, helicopters, stars ও planets report generate করতে পারে, বিশেষত wave-এর সময়। Approaching aircraft stationary মনে হতে পারে; turn sudden lateral motion তৈরি করতে পারে; atmospheric scintillation colour বদলাতে পারে।
