Overview

In 2020, the U.S. Department of Defense officially released three widely discussed U.S. Navy videos depicting Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) and formally acknowledged their authenticity. During the same year, the Department established the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF) to improve the government's ability to detect, analyse and understand reports of unidentified objects operating within restricted military airspace.

Together, these developments represented the most significant expansion of official U.S. government involvement in UAP investigations since the publication of the New York Times investigation in December 2017.

The official confirmation of the videos, combined with the formation of the UAP Task Force, marked a transition from isolated investigations toward a coordinated government effort focused on intelligence collection and national security.

Pentagon Release of Navy Videos

On 27 April 2020, the Department of Defense officially released three infrared videos recorded by U.S. Navy aircraft:

  • FLIR1 ("Tic Tac")
  • GIMBAL
  • GOFAST

The videos had previously circulated publicly following the 2017 New York Times investigation but had not been formally released by the Department of Defense.

The Pentagon stated that the videos were authorised for public release in order to clear up misconceptions regarding their authenticity and to confirm that they depicted genuine recordings made by Navy personnel.

Importantly, the Department emphasised that the aerial phenomena shown in the videos remained officially classified as "unidentified."

Formation of the UAP Task Force

Later in 2020, the Department of Defense established the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF) under the authority of the Office of Naval Intelligence.

The Task Force was created to:

  • Improve the collection and analysis of UAP reports.
  • Standardise reporting procedures across the Department of Defense.
  • Assess potential threats to military operations.
  • Coordinate intelligence from multiple government agencies.
  • Brief senior defence officials and Congress on significant findings.

The UAPTF inherited many responsibilities previously associated with earlier investigative efforts while operating under a broader intelligence mandate.

Its mission focused on understanding whether reported objects represented advanced foreign technologies, sensor anomalies or genuinely unexplained phenomena.

Public and Government Response

The Pentagon's official release of the Navy videos received extensive international media coverage and was widely interpreted as an unprecedented acknowledgement that the government continued to investigate unexplained aerial incidents.

Congress increased oversight of UAP investigations, requesting classified briefings and requiring intelligence agencies to produce formal assessments regarding unidentified aerial phenomena.

The creation of the UAP Task Force also demonstrated increasing cooperation between military, intelligence and congressional institutions in addressing reports that had previously received limited public attention.

These developments directly contributed to the publication of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence's Preliminary Assessment on UAP in June 2021.

Historical Significance

The events of 2020 marked a major milestone in the evolution of modern U.S. government engagement with unidentified aerial phenomena.

Their significance includes:

  • Official release of authenticated U.S. Navy UAP videos.
  • Public confirmation that the videos depicted genuine military recordings.
  • Establishment of the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force.
  • Expansion of intelligence analysis concerning unexplained aerial encounters.
  • Increased congressional oversight of UAP investigations.
  • Foundation for later organisations including AOIMSG and AARO.

By combining official public disclosure with the creation of a dedicated investigative body, 2020 transformed UAP investigations from a relatively limited military concern into an ongoing national security issue subject to formal government oversight.
