Eupen opening

On 29 November 1989, gendarmes Heinrich Nicoll and Hubert von Montigny described a large slow triangular or platform-like object with bright corner lights and a red centre. Other reports followed.

March F-16 response

After Wavre-area reports on 30–31 March, ground stations reported intermittent contacts and two F-16s launched from Beauvechain. Over roughly an hour, they obtained several short locks with apparent rapid changes, but neither crew visually acquired a craft or held a stable independent track.

Photographic claim

The Petit-Rechain image became the wave’s emblem, then lost evidential value when its photographer admitted in 2011 that it was a model-and-lights fabrication.

How the Belgian Wave Developed

Early police reports expanded under media attention and SOBEPS collection. Public presentations by Colonel Wilfried De Brouwer gave international visibility to an Air Force position that the phenomena were unidentified at the time, not identified as extraterrestrial. Popular narratives often merge many events and overstate radar-visual correlation.

Within the public record of the Belgian UFO wave of 1989–1990 there are few elements more central, yet more carefully bounded, than the combination of early professional testimony from gendarmes, the documented decision by the Belgian Air Force to scramble F-16 fighters, the existence of brief radar contacts, and the official acknowledgment that the phenomena remained unidentified at the time. These establish that authorities investigated unusual reports with seriousness. At the same time, material limitations are substantial. Visual and radar data were not continuously correlated. The F-16 pilots obtained only short, unstable locks and never visually acquired a craft. Some radar returns are consistent with atmospheric effects or mutual aircraft detection. The iconic Petit-Rechain photograph is a confirmed hoax. Media coverage and the activities of SOBEPS likely amplified and standardised later reports. A multi-stimulus interpretation (aircraft, helicopters, stars, radar artifacts, expectation effects, and residual unknowns) accounts for the bulk of the wave without requiring a single advanced craft operating for months over a densely populated NATO country.

Early professional reports

On 29 November 1989 two gendarmes near Eupen provided detailed statements describing a large triangular object with lights. Subsequent reports accumulated through the winter. The strength of these early accounts lies in the professional status of the observers and the relative promptness of the initial statements. Their limitations include the absence of independent photographic or continuous radar confirmation of the specific objects described on that first night, and the progressive standardisation of the triangular template under media attention.

The 30–31 March 1990 F-16 scramble

Following ground reports of unusual lights, the Belgian Air Force scrambled two F-16s from Beauvechain. Over roughly an hour the aircraft obtained several brief radar locks showing apparent rapid changes in altitude and speed. Neither pilot visually acquired a craft, and the locks were short and unstable. Official statements by then-Colonel (later General) Wilfried De Brouwer treated the contacts as unidentified at the time. Subsequent technical review has noted that some returns are consistent with mutual detection between the two fighters or with atmospheric propagation effects. The scramble and the existence of the radar recordings are established; the interpretation of the kinematics as real extreme manoeuvres of an independent object remains open.

The Petit-Rechain photograph

The widely circulated image of a dark triangle with corner lights, claimed to have been taken near Petit-Rechain in April 1990, became the visual emblem of the wave. In 2011 the photographer publicly admitted that the image was a fabrication produced with a polystyrene model and lights. The photograph therefore has no evidential value for the physical events of the wave.

Comparison of the principal explanations

It does not establish continuous multi-sensor tracking of a single advanced craft, nor does it eliminate conventional and technical explanations for the majority of the individual reports.
