The confirmed surveillance balloon

The first event was a high-altitude Chinese surveillance balloon, shot down off South Carolina on 4 February. The Defense Department described recovery of a significant debris field for analysis of its surveillance capabilities. This recovery-based record is not interchangeable with the later shootdowns.

Alaska, Yukon and Lake Huron objects

On 10 February, an F-22 downed an object off Alaska that officials said was about the size of a small car, at roughly 40,000 feet, and a potential civil-aviation hazard; at the time they said its purpose and origin were unknown. A Yukon object followed on 11 February and a Lake Huron object on 12 February. Public descriptions were incomplete and evolved as information was assessed.

Detection context

Officials said they were adjusting radar filters and surveillance practices after the balloon event. This matters because an increased rate of detection does not necessarily represent an increased rate of unusual objects; it changes the observational baseline.

The Chinese balloon is confirmed: origin, role and recovery are established. The three subsequent objects were real airborne targets engaged under a changed detection regime; their precise identity (hobbyist, commercial, research, or other) remains incompletely resolved in the public domain, with official statements favouring benign balloon-class explanations. Collapsing all four events into a single “UAP” or “adversary swarm” frame is not supported by the differentiated evidence. The Chinese surveillance balloon

A Chinese high-altitude surveillance balloon transited North American airspace and was shot down on 4 February 2023. Recovery and intelligence assessment established its origin and surveillance role. This element of the sequence is established at high confidence.

The three subsequent objects

Between 10 and 12 February 2023 three additional objects were tracked and shot down over Alaska, Yukon and Lake Huron. Official statements described them as smaller and slower than the Chinese balloon and not assessed as kinetic military threats. Detection filters had been adjusted after the Chinese balloon, increasing the likelihood that previously filtered returns would now be tracked. Debris recovery for these three objects was limited in the public record. Official language left open the possibility of commercial, research or hobby balloons.

Differentiation of the events
