Phase 1: travelling lights
From Nevada through Prescott, Phoenix and toward Tucson, witnesses described a slow V, arc or boomerang. Some saw separate lights or changing spacing; others inferred a dark solid body. An amateur astronomer reported individual aircraft through a telescope.
Phase 2: stationary lights
At about 10 p.m., a separate arc of bright lights southwest of Phoenix appeared to hover, descend and disappear sequentially. Maryland ANG A-10s released LUU-2 flares, which descended by parachute behind the Estrella ridgeline.
What the record establishes
- Two temporally and geographically distinct phases occurred.
- The late stationary lights were confirmed military flares.
- Earlier lights travelled along an aviation corridor.
- No public radar or image proves a continuous giant solid body.
