In 1971, an automated mapping camera photographed an unusual form above Lake Cote, Costa Rica. Vinnie Adams asks researcher Esteban Carranza how the negative passed into his care, how subsequent scans were produced and why he rejects explanations such as dust, reflection or lens flare. Filmmaker Adam Pillon discusses the documentary built around the photograph and the people connected to it. Neither guest claims to know what the image shows.

A photograph made by accident
Nobody aboard the aircraft was trying to photograph a UFO. Carranza says the mapping camera fired automatically every 13 seconds and that the crew noticed nothing unusual during the flight. The unusual form appears in frame 300 but not in the neighbouring exposures, making the sequence—not simply the familiar cropped image—central to the case.
The negative and its digital history
Carranza traces the negative from the Costa Rican mapping archive through his uncle Hermann Kopper and into his own care. He describes an initial scan in Costa Rica, a drum scan by Michael Strickland in the United States and a later scan that retained scratches and other marks normally removed during photographic processing. The raw-format scan is available to download, and Carranza says he would make the negative available if better imaging became possible.
Photographic explanations and an unidentified image
Adams asks about dust, reflection, lens flare and camera malfunction. Carranza answers from the camera’s operation and Strickland’s reported examination of the film grain, while Pillon points to the form’s apparent shape and lighting. Their answers explain why they reject several conventional artefacts, but they do not determine what produced the image.
The people around the photograph
Pillon did not set out to make a purely technical film about an old photograph. Sergio Loaiza, Kelly, Emi and the other participants became central as production continued, bringing family history, stigma and personal experience into the story. The result is a documentary about the lives gathered around the image as much as the image itself.
Assessment
Why the photograph remains of interest
The Lake Cote case combines an automated government mapping survey, a surviving negative with a reported custody history, neighbouring exposures and high-resolution scans that can be examined beyond the familiar crop. Carranza connects those parts of the history and explains why later scans were made differently. His account gives researchers a route through the photograph’s provenance and the material available for further study.
What further analysis requires
The original negative, the camera and flight records, and a complete account of each scan would give specialists a firmer basis for comparing photographic explanations. Making the highest-quality files available is therefore more important than repeatedly interpreting the cropped image. The form in frame 300 remains unidentified; this conversation cannot establish its nature or origin.
