Overview
The Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU) is an independent United States nonprofit whose membership includes scientists, engineers, analysts and other technical professionals. Its public work includes case investigations, dataset studies, conferences, newsletters and methodological material.
SCU’s financial page dates its foundation to 2018 and nonprofit status to 2019. Some earlier organisational material has used 2017 when describing its formation. The dated corporate account supports using 2018 for the formal organisation, while informal collaboration may have preceded incorporation.
The organisation describes its work as scientific research, but its outputs pass through different review routes. An internally reviewed report, a conference presentation, a preprint and an article accepted by an external journal do not carry the same evidential status. Each product therefore needs assessment by its data provenance, methods, uncertainty treatment and publication process.

Coalition founded
SCU’s current corporate and financial account identifies 2018 as its founding year, following earlier informal collaboration among researchers interested in technical UAP analysis.

Member-led teams analyse selected incidents, historical collections and recurring research questions. The availability of underlying material varies by case, affecting how fully an outside reader can reproduce the analysis.
Evidence-screened report intake
The public submission route requires a direct witness and contextual detail, together with original image data or documented physical evidence where relevant. Meeting that threshold begins evaluation; it does not validate the reported interpretation.
Scientific community-building
Conferences, working groups and publications connect researchers across science, engineering, policy and government backgrounds. These activities can develop methods and collaboration, while remaining distinct from independent peer review.

Evidence assessment
SCU provides a continuing technical network for work that might otherwise remain dispersed among individual researchers. Its investigation criteria seek direct witnesses and original image, sensor or physical material, which can improve the starting record compared with an unrestricted sighting database. Acceptance for enquiry nevertheless means that a report met an intake threshold, not that its interpretation was verified.
The evidential weight of SCU publications varies. An organisational report may document substantial analysis without having undergone independent academic peer review; a conference presentation, preprint and journal article also represent different stages of scrutiny. Historical studies can be further constrained by inherited datasets whose original collection conditions, exclusions or coding decisions are incomplete.
SCU’s work is therefore best assessed paper by paper. Transparent methods, access to source material, explicit uncertainty and independent attempts to reproduce an analysis carry more weight than organisational affiliation or the technical credentials of the authors alone.
Scope and limits
What the record supports
