Overview
The National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) has received civilian reports in the United States and internationally since 1974. It operates an online reporting form and telephone hotline and publishes standardised summaries in a searchable data bank.
The collection’s principal value is longitudinal: it records when and where people submitted reports and how they described their observations. Researchers have used the data to examine geography, timing and proximity to environmental or military features. Such analysis requires controls for population, internet access, publicity, reporting behaviour and changes in the centre’s own intake process.
A database entry establishes that NUFORC received and published a report. It does not by itself demonstrate that the described event occurred exactly as stated, that independent corroboration exists or that a complete investigation failed to identify a conventional cause.

Reporting centre founded

The centre collects structured information about the observer, time, location, duration, appearance and circumstances. Urgent or aviation-related reports may also be made by telephone.
Editorial screening and publication
NUFORC reviews submissions before adding summaries to the data bank. Publication improves accessibility but should not be mistaken for a uniform field investigation or independent verification.
Research use
Outside researchers use the collection as a dataset of reported observations. Its scale supports pattern analysis, while self-selection, duplicate or inaccurate entries and uneven contextual data constrain causal conclusions.

Evidence assessment
NUFORC’s database is a record of reporting behaviour on a scale and over a period that few civilian collections match. Its structured fields make it possible to ask when and where reports were submitted and how witnesses described them. The collection is therefore useful for identifying patterns that may justify further enquiry and for studying the social history of public UFO reporting.
Those patterns cannot be interpreted as a direct map of unidentified objects. Submission is voluntary, population and internet access are uneven, media attention changes reporting rates, and entries may be incomplete, duplicated or mistaken. Geographic correlations require comparison with exposure, population and alternative explanatory variables before they can support a causal claim.
The database is strongest as a hypothesis-generating and reporting-history resource. An individual entry establishes that an account was received and published; case verification depends on contemporaneous records and corroboration outside the database.
