Lee Roy Gaitan
Constable Gaitan added a named law-enforcement witness to the Stephenville case.
Who This Witness Was
Lee Roy Gaitan was the elected constable for Erath County Precinct 2 during the Stephenville-area reporting wave of January 2008.
He reported his own sighting near Dublin, Texas, and later received or discussed reports from other residents through his public role.
These are two separate evidential functions:
- direct witness to his own observation;
- law-enforcement contact for community reports.
Statements made by residents to Gaitan should remain attributed to those residents.
What Is Attributable to This Witness
In a July 2008 CNN interview, Gaitan said that on 8 January at approximately 7:15–7:30 p.m., about two-and-a-half miles south of Dublin, he observed:
- a large red orb in the south-western sky;
- the orb appearing briefly, disappearing and reappearing;
- an estimated distance of about 500 yards, though no range measurement was made;
- later, nine or ten bright flashing lights farther west;
- the lights moving or "bouncing" relative to one another;
- no visible outline through binoculars;
- a period of roughly two minutes;
- sequential rapid departure towards the south-east;
- no sound from the lights;
- two jets later travelling in the same general direction.
He explicitly said that he did not know what he saw.
His later interpretation that the speed exceeded familiar aircraft performance was based on visual appearance without a measured distance.
How the Account Entered the Record
Gaitan gave interviews during the active 2008 reporting period.
His named, dated account is stronger than an anonymous later report.
The US Air Force initially stated that no military aircraft were operating in the area. It later corrected the statement and acknowledged that ten F-16s from the 301st Fighter Wing had been training in the Brownwood Military Operating Area.
Civilian investigators obtained FAA radar data and attempted to compare reported times and positions with uncorrelated returns.
Gaitan's observation should not automatically be assigned to a radar target unless a direct time-and-bearing match is demonstrated.
Evidence Analysis
Directness and Access
Gaitan was a direct observer of:
- the red light;
- the later flashing-light group;
- the absence of a visible outline through his binoculars;
- the two later jets;
- his location and approximate time.
He was not a direct source for:
- Steve Allen's observation;
- Ricky Sorrells's close structured-object claim;
- every community report;
- the full radar reconstruction;
- the purpose of the military aircraft.

Gaitan's local experience supports:

The Initial Red Orb
The red orb was visible only briefly and disappeared before his family joined him.
Possible sources include:
- aircraft light;
- flare;
- distant vehicle or tower light;
- celestial object distorted near the horizon;
- light seen through cloud;
- a genuinely unidentified object.
The 500-yard estimate is not reliable without a known physical size.
The Later Nine or Ten Lights
The group of flashing lights is a separate visual phase.
Gaitan did not see a body connecting them, even through binoculars.
The lights could represent:
- several aircraft;
- a formation;
- flares;
- stars distorted by atmospheric conditions;
- one object with multiple lights;
- more than one unrelated source.
The absence of a visible outline is important contrary evidence against a confidently described solid craft.
Apparent Bouncing
"Bouncing" describes angular movement on the sky.
Possible causes include:
- independent aircraft motion;
- atmospheric scintillation;
- hand-held binocular movement;
- observer movement;
- changing cloud obscuration;
- actual manoeuvring.
No video permits measurement.
Sequential Departure
Lights leaving in sequence are strongly compatible with:
- aircraft in formation turning or accelerating;
- navigation lights becoming hidden;
- lights being switched off;
- flares extinguishing;
- one multi-light object's changing orientation.
The claim of blazing speed depends on assumed range and continuity.
Two Jets
Gaitan saw and heard two jets after the lights disappeared.
This is strong evidence that military or conventional aircraft were present in the local sky.
It does not establish pursuit.
The jets may have been:
- part of the acknowledged F-16 exercise;
- ordinary military traffic;
- responding to another event;
- unrelated.
No pilot publicly confirmed chasing an unknown object.
Relationship to the F-16 Admission
Ten F-16s were confirmed in the wider exercise area.
This materially increases the plausibility that:
- some lights were aircraft;
- formations changed;
- rapid movement occurred;
- radar contained military targets;
- jets appeared after civilian observations.
It does not explain the initial red orb conclusively.
Radar Comparison
Private analysts identified radar returns they considered uncorrelated.
A visual-radar match requires:
- precise witness time;
- location;
- bearing;
- elevation;
- target track;
- exclusion of known aircraft.
Gaitan's public time window and approximate direction are not sufficient to identify one return securely.
Family Support
Gaitan's young son later joined him outside. The public statement does not establish that the son saw the initial red orb.
Any supporting observation should be attributed separately and based on an individual account.
Media Context
The CNN interview occurred six months later and after extensive publicity.
The broad account was already public, but exact wording and estimates could be influenced by repeated discussion.
Earlier local interviews should control where available.

Confirmed F-16 activity provides a strong conventional context, particularly for the group of flashing lights and later jets. The initial red orb and complete sequence remain unidentified.
