USAF RB-47 reconnaissance crew
The RB-47 crew provided one of the most discussed combined witness-and-instrument records in historical UAP literature.
Who These Witnesses Were
The witness group consisted of six United States Air Force officers flying an RB-47H electronic-reconnaissance aircraft during a training mission over the southern United States on 17 July 1957.
The crew commonly identified in later technical literature was:
- Major Lewis D. Chase, aircraft commander and pilot;
- First Lieutenant James H. McCoid, co-pilot;
- Captain Thomas H. Hanley, navigator;
- Captain John J. Provenzano, electronic-warfare monitor number one;
- Captain Frank B. McClure, electronic-warfare monitor number two;
- Captain Walter A. Tuchscherer, electronic-warfare monitor number three.
The aircraft carried passive electronic intelligence equipment designed to detect, characterise and determine the bearing of radar emissions. It was not simply an ordinary bomber with a conventional airborne search radar tracking a target. The distinction matters because the principal onboard electronic evidence was directional detection of a microwave signal rather than a direct measurement of an object's range and position.
The crew label should not imply that all six men saw or measured every part of the event. Each occupied a specialised station and had different access to the visual, electronic and navigational evidence.
What Is Attributable to This Witness Group
The surviving official summaries and later technical reconstructions describe a prolonged event involving several evidence channels:
- McClure detected an unusual signal near 2,800 megahertz on his electronic-monitoring equipment;
- the signal appeared to move in bearing relative to the aircraft;
- Chase and McCoid reported seeing a bright light during portions of the flight;
- ground radar personnel reportedly tracked an unidentified target in the aircraft's vicinity;
- the crew attempted to manoeuvre towards or investigate the source;
- the visual light and electronic signal reportedly disappeared and reappeared during different phases;
- the event extended across a substantial distance and was documented through Air Force reporting channels.
The best evidence is the combination of contemporaneous records and differentiated crew roles. The case is not supported only by a dramatic story recalled decades later.
However, specific performance claims should remain tied to the data actually preserved. The public record does not contain a complete raw recording of every electronic bearing, radar return, aircraft position and visual observation synchronised to the second.
What Should Not Be Attributed Equally to Every Crew Member
The crew's roles require source separation:
- McClure was the principal source for the unusual 2,800 MHz signal on monitor number two.
- Chase and McCoid had the best forward visual access from the cockpit.
- Hanley could document navigation and aircraft position but did not necessarily share every visual observation.
- Provenzano and Tuchscherer operated other electronic-monitoring stations and could speak to their own equipment indications.
- Ground-radar information came from controllers or radar sites, not from direct observation by the onboard crew.
A group page should not write that "the crew's radar locked onto the UFO" unless the exact system and operator are identified. The RB-47's relevant onboard equipment was passive ELINT. It detected emissions and bearing information; it did not provide a conventional radar range track.
How the Account Entered the Record
Contemporary Air Force material reportedly included:
- a message from the 745th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron dated 17 July 1957;
- a wing intelligence summary;
- an Airborne Observer Data Sheet sent to Project Blue Book;
- operational and investigative correspondence.
The case later became Case 5 in the University of Colorado UFO study, commonly known as the Condon Report. The Condon investigator initially worked from a date described as being in the autumn of 1957 and could not locate all relevant records. The report nevertheless concluded that the event remained unidentified on the evidence available to the project.
Atmospheric physicist James E. McDonald later located records that fixed the date as 17 July 1957 and developed a much more detailed reconstruction. His analysis was published in an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics journal discussion in 1971 and reproduced by NICAP.
This history creates an important caution. Some early weather and astronomical checks were performed for the wrong date. Later reconstruction improved the documentary basis, but it also relied on interviews and interpretation after more than a decade. Contemporary records and later memory should be compared rather than merged without distinction.
Evidence Analysis
Directness and Operational Access
The crew were direct participants in an instrumented military flight. Their access was stronger than that of ordinary ground observers because they could compare the event with aircraft position, heading, electronic bearings and communications.
The event still involved different observational layers:
- visual perception of a light;
- passive detection of a microwave signal;
- reports from ground radar;
- aircraft manoeuvres;
- later correlation of times and positions.
No individual crew member directly observed the causal connection among all of those layers. Correlation is an analytical conclusion.
Relevant Expertise
The crew had substantial expertise in:
- military aviation;
- night-flight operations;
- navigation;
- electronic-warfare equipment;
- radar emitters and signal characteristics;
- operational communication;
- distinguishing ordinary equipment behaviour from unusual indications.
This expertise increases the value of reports that a signal behaved unexpectedly or that a visual target did not resemble routine traffic.
It does not remove fundamental measurement limits. A bright light of unknown range cannot yield reliable physical size or speed from vision alone. Electronic-warfare expertise can identify a signal's frequency and bearing while leaving open whether the source was airborne, ground-based, reflected, anomalously propagated or generated by equipment effects.
Nature of the ELINT Detection
Monitor number two reportedly detected a signal around 2,800 MHz with characteristics resembling a ground radar. The equipment could determine the direction from which a signal appeared to arrive.
This is not equivalent to imaging a solid object. The signal could have originated from:
- a ground-based radar emitter;
- an airborne radar;
- a test transmitter;
- reflected or refracted energy;
- a side-lobe or multipath effect;
- another conventional electronic source;
- an unidentified emitting platform.
The unusual claim is that the bearing behaviour appeared to correspond with a moving source and with visual and ground-radar observations. The strength of that claim depends on time synchronisation and the accuracy of reconstructed positions.
Visual Evidence
Chase and McCoid reportedly saw a bright object or light during several phases. Visual observation adds an external channel independent of the electronic display.
The object was not photographed. The crew did not resolve construction details in the public record sufficient to identify wings, fuselage, propulsion or surface features. Descriptions of colour and brightness may be affected by distance, atmospheric extinction, cockpit glazing and dark adaptation.
A bright star, planet, aircraft light or ground source can appear unusual from a moving aircraft. The case becomes stronger only if the visual bearings and movements can be shown to match the electronic source beyond reasonable timing uncertainty.
Ground Radar
Ground controllers reportedly advised that an unidentified target was near the RB-47 and provided range or position information. This is potentially important because ground radar offers a channel separate from the aircraft's passive receiver.
The public record does not include a complete raw radar film or digital data package with:
- sweep-by-sweep plots;
- radar settings;
- clutter and filtering information;
- calibration records;
- exact beam geometry;
- operator annotations;
- weather-propagation analysis;
- time synchronisation with the aircraft's logs.
Later summaries can establish that a target was reported. They cannot provide the same analytical confidence as preserved raw radar data.
Temporal and Spatial Correlation
The case is often described as a three-channel correlation: visual, airborne electronic and ground radar. This is the strongest extraordinary argument.
To demonstrate that all channels represented one object, an analyst would need to show:
- overlapping times within known clock error;
- compatible bearings from the aircraft;
- compatible ground-radar positions;
- aircraft manoeuvres and target movement reconstructed from logs;
- continuity through disappearances and reappearances;
- exclusion of more than one conventional source.
The available summaries support some correlation but do not preserve every raw measurement. The possibility that separate stimuli were combined remains relevant.
Date and Documentary Reconstruction
The correction from an assumed autumn date to 17 July 1957 materially changed the case. Weather, astronomical bodies, military operations and radar conditions vary by date.
This illustrates why memory alone is insufficient for technical reconstruction. McDonald's later work benefited from records, but the Condon project's initial inability to locate them reduced its analysis.
The page should state that the event is historically documented while acknowledging that the public archive is incomplete and has been interpreted through competing retrospective analyses.
Reported Manoeuvres and Performance
The target was reported to move, reverse relative bearing, appear ahead of the aircraft and evade approach. These descriptions can suggest controlled behaviour.
Physical performance cannot be calculated securely without range and continuous track data. A distant light, a changing aircraft heading or switching between multiple sources can create apparent rapid movement. Ground radar may supply range during some phases, but the public record does not provide a continuous measured trajectory for every visual and electronic observation.
Claims of impossible acceleration should therefore be presented as interpretations of the reported sequence rather than as fully reproduced calculations.
Security and Classified Context
The RB-47H mission involved electronic intelligence equipment and Cold War air-defence environments. Some records, equipment details or emitters may have been classified.
A classified test, friendly radar exercise or adversary electronic activity is a plausible category. Classification can explain missing detail, but it cannot be used as evidence that a particular secret system caused the event.
Crew Agreement and Independence
Six people aboard one aircraft do not provide six fully independent observations. They shared:
- one platform;
- one mission;
- internal communication;
- aircraft manoeuvres;
- knowledge that an unusual event was under investigation;
- post-flight debriefing.
Their specialised stations nevertheless provide meaningful functional independence. An electronic operator and a pilot were not simply repeating the same unaided visual impression.
The page should distinguish platform dependence from evidence-channel diversity.
Alternative Interpretations
Ground radar emitters combined with visual misidentification
Strengths
- The detected frequency was compatible with conventional radar technology.
- The southern route passed within range of multiple radar installations.
- Side lobes, reflections and changing aircraft orientation can alter bearings.
- Bright stars, planets, aircraft or ground lights can provide separate visual stimuli.
Weaknesses
- The crew considered the signal behaviour inconsistent with a fixed ground emitter.
- Reported ground-radar tracking appeared to place a target near the aircraft.
- Visual and electronic events were said to coincide repeatedly.
- A multi-source explanation must reproduce the detailed time line rather than list generic possibilities.
Anomalous propagation or equipment effects
Strengths
- Atmospheric conditions can bend radar energy and produce unexpected bearings or ground-radar targets.
- Electronic systems can display side-lobe, multipath or transient effects.
- Disappearances and reappearances can follow propagation changes.
- No raw recording survives publicly for independent reprocessing.
Weaknesses
- The trained operator recognised ordinary signals and regarded this one as unusual.
- A propagation explanation must account for apparent movement and visual correlation.
- Multiple systems and observers were reportedly involved.
Conventional aircraft or classified exercise
Strengths
- Military aircraft can carry radar emitters and manoeuvre near reconnaissance flights.
- A classified electronic-warfare exercise could deliberately create unusual indications.
- Security restrictions could explain incomplete documentation.
- Ground controllers may have tracked a conventional aircraft without full identification.
Weaknesses
- No exercise or aircraft has been publicly matched to the route and time.
- The reported visual appearance and signal behaviour were not recognised as routine.
- An uncoordinated interception of an RB-47 would create operational and safety records.
Several conventional sources combined into one narrative
Strengths
- The event covered a long route and multiple phases.
- A fixed emitter, astronomical light, aircraft and ground-radar anomaly could occur at different times.
- Retrospective reconstruction can compress discontinuous observations.
- Apparent continuity may be inferred rather than measured.
Weaknesses
- Contemporary reporting indicates that the crew treated the phases as related.
- Some time and bearing correlations were documented close to the event.
- The hypothesis becomes complex and requires several coincidental sources.
A genuinely unidentified emitting aerial object
Strengths
- The event involved trained operators and an operational aircraft.
- Visual, ELINT and reported ground-radar channels were present.
- Contemporary Air Force records existed.
- The Condon case remained unidentified, and later analysis strengthened the documentary chronology.
- The signal appeared to have directional and moving characteristics.
Weaknesses
- Raw electronic and radar recordings are not publicly available.
- Not every phase has measured range.
- Later analysis relied partly on recollection.
- Unidentified does not determine construction, operator or origin.

- A non-human origin.
Overall Assessment
We assess the RB-47 crew as a high-value military witness group because the incident combined specialised operators, contemporaneous official documentation and more than one observational channel. The strongest evidence is not the status of the witnesses alone but the reported relationship among visual observation, passive electronic detection and ground radar.
From the available evidence, we judge that the event remains technically unresolved. The public archive is not complete enough to reproduce the full correlation or calculate extraordinary performance with confidence. The onboard system detected an emission; it did not directly image or range a solid craft. Ground-radar and visual evidence add weight, but continuity across every phase remains partly reconstructed.
The case warrants a stronger confidence rating than a solitary light report. It does not support a confident conclusion about origin. The most defensible assessment is a documented, multi-channel Cold War aviation anomaly whose source has not been established from the surviving public record.
