8 July 2026 — AARO released the paper arising from its August 2025 workshop. It addressed the collection, infrastructure, interoperability, and analysis of narrative UAP reports.

Scientific significance

The paper documents inconsistent formats and terminology, missing dates and coordinates, absent sensor and environmental data, poor preservation of originals, uncertain chain of custody, classification barriers, transcription and translation errors, and altered or AI-generated imagery. It recommends standard metadata schemas, contextual links to weather, air-traffic and astronomical records, retention of source files, and human oversight of AI classification.

Its central methodological point is that statistical patterns are only interpretable when variables are comparable and selection effects are understood. Narrative reports can direct investigators toward corroborating records, but cannot by themselves establish range-dependent quantities such as physical speed or acceleration.

Assessment

This was one of the year’s more scientifically credible contributions, although it concerned research methodology rather than a discovery. Its practical value now depends on implementation: common schemas, machine-readable releases, preserved originals, and complete provenance for imagery, video, and testimony.
