Overview

‘Orb’ can describe a structured sphere, a distant point source or a luminous image without reliable range. Reports in this category therefore do not necessarily describe the same phenomenon.

Observation and identification

Distance, focus, atmospheric scattering and sensor bloom can turn an unresolved light into an apparently bounded sphere. Structure should be claimed only when the observation or recording resolves it.

The earliest wording, sketches and recordings carry greater evidential weight than later labels or illustrations.
